Ab Mitte der 1950er Jahre beschaffte die Deutsche Bundesbahn insgesamt 942 Lokomotiven der Baureihen V 60/V 60.1 für den leichten und mittleren Rangierdienst. Der Unterschied zwischen den Baureihen V 60 (260) und V 60.1 (261) besteht in der höheren Reibungslast der BR 261. Die Maschinen erreichen im Rangiergang eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit von 30 km/h, im Streckengang von 60 km/h. Die Leistung beträgt 478 kW. Nach den ersten Ausmusterungen in den 1980er Jahren gelangten viele Exemplare an Bahnen im In- und Ausland.
